Thursday, January 30, 2020 Blocks 4 & 7

Hey Gang...Still sick here...I  am sorry I  won't make it in today.  You are tasked with the following.

Please continue reading through the Road to Civil War Doc and answer the following Q's in your notes so we can discuss them on Monday.

1. What were the details of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and what party was formed because of it?
2. What was the purpose of the Republican party?
3. What happened in Lawrence, Kansas in 1856? (I know, Kansas, who cares, right?)
4. Who was John Brown (BTW, he is one of my favorite persons in American History)
5. After looking at the image of John Brown with the awesome beard, how is he portrayed in the image?  Does he look like a hero? A villain?  What is he holding?  Does he look a smidge crazy?
6.  There is no way things could get more violent, right?  Wrong!  What happened to Senator Charles Sumner in May 1856?
7.  What was the verdict of the Dred Scott decision?
8. Read Lincoln's "House Divided" speech.  What is the key phrase that indicated how Lincoln feels about slavery and the nation.
9. After reading the paragraphs about John Brown (whom I  LOVE) and after watching these two short flicks (Smithsonian - John Brown's Raid     PBS CW: Martyr or Hero?)   Do you think he was a martyr or a hero?  Why?
10.  What happened to the Southern states once Abraham Lincoln won the Election of 1860?

Ignore the Road to Civil War Writing Assignment...Y'all aren't doing that this year.  You're welcome...

Once you have finished these Q's, you may spend the rest of the class period working on your James K. Polk and Zach Taylor Presidential Projects.   BTW, you can use 15 A for the Day's for James K. Polk and 10 for Zach Taylor...just sayin.

Thank you for doing this for me while I am home coughing my brains out and thank you for being good for whomever is covering class today.  See you Thursday and Be Good!
