Week of August 24-28

Hey Gang!  Welcome to the second week of school!  This week we'll be colonizing North America!  Huzzah. Last week we looked at Geography and European Exploration of the western hemisphere.  

Day 1
In Class:  50 State Project due  WEDNESDAY BEFORE SCHOOL -- Continue our reading of Roanoke/Jamestown and answering questions about colonization: Exploration and Colonization Reading! Click Me!  The Golden Questions below NEED to be answered in your notes as we discuss them.  We will read in class about the 13 colonies and 3 colonial regions...

We need to answer these questions this week in class and go over them on Friday:
-What is a colony?
-Why colonize?
-What nations colonized the “New World”?
-Where were the first colonies?
-What types of people were the first settlers?
-What difficulties did the colonists face?
-How did Jamestown survive?
-Which colony was the LOST colony & which was the first successful?
-Know the colonies in the 3 colonial regions
-What was the main reason for settling the New England colonies?
-What was the main reason for settling the Middle Colonies?
-What was the main reason for settling the Southern Colonies
-How did the three regions make money? (Economy) -- Check out the Map on page 3
-Which region do you think would be the best for farming? Why is this? :)
-Which region do you think would be the hardest place to live?
-Do you think more people lived in cities or on farms?
-How do you think knowledge & news spread throughout the colonies?
-What do you think was the most important part of colonial life? (aside from surviving)
-Do you think most colonists were formally educated?  Why/Why not?
-The colonies grew tremendously from 1607—1750s from 50,000 to just over one million. What impact do you think this had on the colonies/colonists?  Provide two examples.
