Week 21: Jan. 23-27, 2k23

The Road to Civil War Begins!

  • Mexican-American War (1846-1848)...America invaded and defeated Mexico in 1846...ended in 1848. Short war
  • Compromise of 1850...Not really a good compromise. In fact, it benefitted southerners way more than northerners. A southerner wrote it.
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin...This book was a BIG BIG deal. I’ve read it. It’s gruesome. Really gruesome. Bad stuff.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854...Wow. Kansas & Nebraska are relevant. Cool. Slavery was allowed here. Repealed the Mizzou Comp. Oops!
  • Republican Party created in 1854...Not Donald Trump. It was created only because they didn’t like slavery. Ban it from spreading!
  • Sack of Lawrence, Kansas, 1856...I’ve been to Lawrence. I’d burn the town to the ground too if I got the chance to go back. It’s miserable.
  • Pottawatomie Creek Massacre, 1856...You’re telling me that an abolitionist hacked slave owners to death? Yup, you have my attention!
  • Beating of Senator Sumner in Congress, 1856...Finally, Congress is beating each other because of their beliefs. We need this now!
  • Dred Scott Decision, 1857...Supreme Court is relevant for like the 3rd time in history.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Senate Debates of 1858...Abraham Lincoln debated Douglas. He won, but lost. He was a professional wrestler, too.
  • John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, 1859...Dude invaded a town and killed people bc he hated slavery.
  •  #AwesomeElection of Abraham Lincoln in 1860...Oh crap! This means war. No, literally, the nation is gonna kill each other bc of this guy.
