Please read page 15-20 (Antietam → Gettysburg) in the Civil War doc. Please make sure you watch the flicks about Antietam, Matthew Brady’s The Dead of Antietam, The Emancipation Proclamation, & Gettysburg.
Answer the following Q’s that go with this section of readin & the flicks:
- The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in the Civil War, and is still the bloodiest day in American history to this day. After reading about Antietam and looking at the statistics provided on the pages, briefly explain why this battle was more difficult for the Confederacy than the Union? (You gotta think about this one!)
- After watching the short flicks about Matthew Brady’s The Dead of Antietam, explain what Matthew Brady did. What impact or effects do you think Brady’s actions had on the war and the people at home far from the battlefields?
- Why did Abraham Lincoln decide to emancipate the slaves? Which slaves did he choose to emancipate? Why only these slaves?
- 1863 is often called the turning point year of the war. Explain in detail who won the battle & why the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. Be sure to include Pickett’s Charge in your explanation and why this was a decision made by Robert E. Lee & George Pickett proved to be a horrible idea.
- Provide a three sentence explanation of the Siege of Vicksburg, MS in your own words.
- How was the Civil War not just a “war on the front lines” or a “war on the battlefield?” but a war where the people at home suffered.
These Q’s must be handwritten in your journals (which are laying in the back of the classroom on the floor) and are due the next class period. If you finish, create a pile on the mini-desk and I will get there early tomorrow to check them out.
